The Auschwitz – Birkenau Memorial has become the world’s symbol of the Holocaust, terror, genocide, and the crimes of World War II. It was established by Germans in 1940, in the suburbs of Oswiecim (about 60 km from Krakow), a Polish city that was annexed to the Third Reich by the Nazis. In 1979 former concentration camp was entered on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
