Zalipie the Painted Cottages

On a sunny weekend we went to see the picturesque village of Zalipie, a small cottages, located near Tarnów, about 100 km from Krakow. Zalipie is like a living art gallery, where the tradition of painting has been passed down from generation to generation and continues to this day. It’s a charming place where you can immerse yourself in local culture and experience the beauty of Polish folk art firsthand.
The tradition of painting and decorating houses dates back to the 19th century. How did it begin? In the past, the cottages were dark, nearly black from soot due to the stoves. To clean them, people started whitewashing the walls, and soon the women began adding colorful patterns to brighten them up.Over time, they also started painting vibrant flowers on windows, fences, garden ornaments, and even dog kennels. This simple act of decoration grew into a beautiful tradition.
It’s worth stopping by the Felicja Curyło Museum, where you can learn about the life and work of one of Zalipie’s most famous folk artists. Curyło was a pioneer of this tradition, and her beautifully decorated home is preserved as a museum, showcasing her extraordinary talent and passion.

Today, a stroll through the village allows visitors to admire the work of these woman. Zalipie offers a unique opportunity to experience Polish folk art in its most authentic form.

The Masurian Lake District in northeastern Poland is one of the most beautiful regions we’ve ever visited. It captivated us with its beauty and tranquility—the rustling of reeds, the splash of water, green meadows, and breathtaking sunsets. Here, we truly felt at peace, completely relaxed, and immersed in nature.

It’s a paradise for sailors, with serene blue lakes all interconnected by rivers and canals, offering endless possibilities for exploration and revealing new, stunning landscapes. We enjoyed cycling along forest paths, which was a lot of fun, and rented a kayak to peacefully paddle through the winding rivers that link the lakes. In the evenings, we gathered around a campfire, listening to the croaking of frogs and the gentle whisper of the wind.

The Masurian Lake District, often called the “Land of a Thousand Lakes,” is a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. With over 2,000 lakes connected by waterways, it’s the perfect place to unwind in the heart of nature. After soaking in the beauty of the lakes, we set off to explore nearby towns such as Giżycko, Mikołajki, and Gierłoż. Each town offers a rich blend of history and culture, with quaint streets, local markets, and beautiful architecture. At Gierłoż, we visited the Wolf’s Lair—Hitler’s former headquarters—on a guided tour, which was a fascinating glimpse into the region’s historical significance.

Whether you’re looking to relax by the lakes, explore charming towns, or enjoy an active holiday in nature, Mazury offers an unforgettable escape. Its perfect blend of natural beauty, outdoor activities, and cultural experiences ensures a memorable visit for every traveler.

Słowinski National Park

Słowiński National Park – Land of Water, Wind and Sand. One of those places that captivated us with the freshness of the air, the wonderful colors of the earth and the diversity of nature. The park is located by the Polish sea, about 110 km from Gdańsk. In 1977, the park was included in the list of UNESCO World Biosphere Reserves. The park was created to preserve the unchanging beauty of the system of coastal lakes, peat bogs, meadows, coastal forests and forests, but above all to preserve the sand dune belt with shifting dunes, unique in Europe. Moving dunes were the most important thing to see on our trip. Walking along the Łebska Spit, we discovered old stumps and fossils of the forest that used to grow there. We had the opportunity to admire the dunes and the rolling waves of the Baltic Sea, and by entering one of the several observation towers we had an even better view of the land of lakes, forests and sand. The biosphere reserve provides plenty of hardened surface. paths for hiking and cycling.

Koniakow Lace

Did you know that the largest lace in the World was made in a small village Koniaków, located in the southern part of Poland? It is the highest elevated village in Silesian Beskid. Every corner of this village offers magnificent views of the Beskid panorama. Five lace manufacturers made the largest napkin, using over 8,000 pieces and 50 km of thread.

Istebna – a village known all over the world for its beautiful, handmade lace. The tradition from Koniaków dates back to the early 20th century. The uniqueness of Koniaków Laces lies in not using templates. Thanks to this, each design is unique and is distinguished by its unique charm, and its form and a multitude of elements depend entirely on the imagination of the lace maker. Tradition is passed down from generation to generation and is still cultivated. In 2017, it was inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

We recommend this trip for groups interesting in culture trips, craft workshops, unique experiences.
